In Hawaii, almost half of the population (75% in Puna) uses water catchment. Free, available, and probably cleaner than county water. For anyone interested, this is a simple, yet informational site on the pros and cons of water catchment:

It's definitely the way to go in tropical island locales. Most Bermudan homeowners also rely on water catchment.
It beats the heck out of my water experience on the lower Yukon River. There, you took your water from the river, after every town along the 2500 miles of the river had dumped their untreated sewage in. We got our water upstream of the town (Emmonak) where I was staying, but of course it was downriver of Mountain Village and every other town on the river. We added chlorine, and hoped we'd avoid the hepatitis A that was epidemic in the area.
Our sewage system was like everyone else's. A 5 gallon plastic pail sat under the toilet seat, with pine-sol inside. When the bucket got half-full, you carried it to the river, and emptied it. _________________ Ah, but I was so much older then.

The end result is the same though- a recent study in the Puna area found that the groundwater was contaminated. It doesn't make sense when composting waste is so easy. _________________ -Erik Wilcox
