Well, haven't posted any lately, we don't have a fridge yet so we've been mostly eating out or eating stuff that don't to be refrigerated, Laughing Not complaining at all, the food here is so fresh and tasty! Once we have a fridge I'll be working on more recipes here!

You can probably grow fruits and vegetables year round. Why would you need a fridge?

true, but until we get it going we need to have certain things refrigerated plus I'd like to make stuff like the tofu scramble again!

We do need to get working on the garden soon. The area that we cleared with the bulldozer a few months ago is already completely overgrown with invasive weeds. It's going to take some work yanking all those out by their roots. I'm glad that Kate is the gardener... Whistle

I'm still eating corn on the cob that I picked a month ago. I just put it in a paper bag in the fridge with the husks still on and it has kept very well. I've got tomatoes hanging upside down in the garage that are still ripening. I've still got a few hot peppers left in the fridge from this years crop and I've got a few jars of stewed tomatoes that I canned (first time canning for me). I've got dried hot peppers from last year and several jars of herbs stored, too. It all keeps the kitchen a little more down to earth. Of course I mix a bit of meat in with my veggies but to each their own. Very Happy

I hear you Tom, I'm a meat eater too. I suppose we might need a carnivore forum around here pretty soon. BTW, what temp is your garage, and how do they ripen hanging like that? Do you pick the branch, or the whole plant before hanging it? I assume you have plenty of sunlight.

Jason, I just pull the plants up by the roots and hang them upside down in the garage. It's cool in there 40-60 degrees depending on the weather. The plants just naturally put their remaining energy into ripening the fruit. A lot of gardeners do this up here.

That's pretty cool. My mater plants died 7 weeks ago, but I'll have to try this next year when the outdoor season is coming to a close. Thanks.

Yeah, we pulled up at least 100 four to five feet tall invasive weeds today. The ground had been dozed a few months ago, so they were easy to yank out by the roots. We've got a big pile of them now- not sure what to do with them so the seeds don't blow all over. I'm tempted to burn them! Twisted Evil

That would work to eliminate most seeds but the chances are that local regulations make it illegal. Whatever you do don't just put them in the compost bin - the chances of the seeds surviving to germinate when the compost is used are too high. Permanent burial under 50cm of topsoil would elminate the problem.

Thanks John. Burying them may just be the best option. BTW, I was just kidding about burning them- I don't want to set the whole Ohia forest on fire. Wink

Maybe you could put them out in the woods in a shady area under the tree canopy where they could compost naturally and would have little chance of propagating due to lack of light.

Good idea. I've got the perfect spot where there's no wind, so the seeds wouldn't get blown everywhere. It's amazing how fast these weeds spread in our magic volcano soil.

Didn't it go starchy and tasteless? I won't buy fresh corn from a store, because it's almost always been a couple of days getting to the store. I only buy at farmers markets or from the farm itself.

Farmer's Markets are the best for fresh fruit and veggies
