Anyone else looking at the cgem?
I still think the atlas looks more robust.
I know the celestron software is better, but I'm still leaning toward the atlas.
Looking forward to a direct shootout. _________________ Banned from coast to coast!

Is this new, or is it a rebranded Atlas? I haven't seen it yet. _________________ -Erik Wilcox

It looks different, but some of the specs are similar. Here's a link:
http://www.celestron.com/c2/product.php?ProdID=548.
There's some indication that the dovetail format may differ, but I haven't confirmed that and probably won't be able to until we see it in person. Plus, it's a little less expensive than the Atlas and uses the GT software package, but with what may be a new polar align routine.
It's an interesting addition now that Orion markets all Celestron products, along with those of Vixen, IOptron, Sky-Watcher and Tele Vue. The Orion website has become a very busy place, with Tele Vue's Ethos displayed right alongside Orion's Expanse line. |

I'm thinking the $1400 price tag is an introductory price.
As soon as I read a review or two I plan on placing an order.
I'm just looking for the best mount possible for $1500,that can handle my 6" achro. _________________ Banned from coast to coast!

| Word is that a new version of the Atlas may be introduced soon. Meanwhile, having the CGEM as yet another new option is very nice. |

Interesting. It looks suspiciously like an Atlas with a few cosmetic upgrades. It will be interesting to hear how it performs. The Atlas is great, IMO. _________________ -Erik Wilcox

I was hoping for a mount with more capacity than the Atlas, more in keeping with the CGE. _________________ Ah, but I was so much older then.

The only complaint I have about the CGE is that it's so massive. The legs are huge, and the section that holds the electronics adds nearly a foot to the height. The Atlas is physically smaller (though still a beast, of course), but not in the same class, as far as weight capacity. If I owned a CGE, I don't think I'd be transporting it much, especially if a 14" sat on top of it.
For a mount that should be overtaxed, the Celestron 10NGT does surprisingly well. I bet a 10" SCT would be rock solid on that mount. _________________ -Erik Wilcox

I'm wondering if celestron will offer a extension like the atlas.
I wouldn't mind picking up a nice f 15 achro. _________________ Banned from coast to coast!

Both are made by Synta- I wonder if the extension would fit either? Though I didn't know that the Atlas had an extension option- that's great. I knew about the SVP extension, which I don't think would fit the Atlas.
If you want an f/15 refractor mount, the CGE probably would be a good choice. _________________ -Erik Wilcox
